Domain Limitations and Requirements[edit]

Registration Policy - As of 2 August 2021

Only the following categories of companies, organisations and individuals will be able to register a .eu domain:

undertakings having their registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway;
organisations established within the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway without prejudice to the application of national law;
natural persons resident European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway;
citizens of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, independently of their place of residence.

For customers of any other country, we offer a Trustee Service.

Origin of the registrant[edit]

If the registrant of the domain name is an organization it must be based in the European Union.

In case the registrant is a private person, it is possible to register a .EU domain even though the registrant is not based in the EU. The registrant however must have an European Citizenship in these cases. This must then be indicated with the X-EU-REGISTRANT-CITIZENSHIP parameter.

Registry Data Verification[edit]

Confirming your registration data is easy and free of charge:

Your .eu domain name remains registered but is temporarily inactive because its delegation is delayed. Services linked to the domain name will not be functional. Once your registration data has been successfully verified, your domain name will be activated.

Trustee Service[edit]

.EU requires a local presence in the European Union in order to register a domain. In most cases a local presence is required for either the owner or the admin-c (Admin-Contact) of that domain. In order to overcome this barrier and make specific TLDs unrestricted HEXONET offers so called Trustee Services for several TLDs which require a local presence, also for EU. Depending on the TLD, the Trustee Service is then either added to the existing contacts, or replaces one or more of the WHOIS contacts. Once replaced the Trustee acts on behalf of the registrant and thereby makes a registration of that specific TLD possible.

In order to enable our trustee service for new .EU domain registrations please use the following parameter with the AddDomain command:

Authorisation Code[edit]

The authorisation code includes a total of 16 letters and digits separated by dashes, in the following format:

XXXX-AAAA-BBBB-CCCC

It will be valid for 40 days by requesting a new authorization code. You can generate a new authcode by removing the domain transfer lock.

Emergency Authorisation Code[edit]

If you cannot obtain an authorisation code from your current registrar or via the My .eu account, you can request an emergency authorisation code from the registry:

Look up your domain name in the web-based WHOIS. https://eurid.eu
Click on the "Request emergency authorisation code" link in the WHOIS query result for your domain name.
Fill out the electronic request form according to instructions and supply the reasons why you were not able to receive the authorisation code from your registrar or My .eu account.
Print the form, sign it and send it to the registry via email at [email protected]. If the requester is an organisation please print the form on company letterhead paper or add a company stamp.

Change language of a contact Handle[edit]

The language of a contact handle can be changed with the following API command
